Headshot Preparation Guide

ensure you're ready for your next chapter!

1. Clothing & Wardrobe

   - Choose Solid Colors:

  • Solid, neutral, or jewel tones (navy, emerald, burgundy, charcoal) photograph best. Avoid busy patterns, stripes, or logos that distract from your face.
  • Color is Key: Choose solid colors. Jewel tones like deep blues, greens, and purples are universally flattering and photograph well. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or bright, neon colors, as they can be distracting and cast unwanted color onto your skin.
  • Necklines Matter: V-necks, scoop necks, or collared shirts can elongate your neck and create a clean, professional look. Consider layers, like a blazer or a stylish cardigan, which add dimension and allow for quick outfit changes.
  • Fit is Everything: Wear clothes that fit you well. Anything too tight or too baggy can be unflattering. A great fit will help you feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
  • Bring Options: Don't limit yourself to one outfit! Bring 2-3 different tops or blazers. This gives us variety and allows you to choose what you feel best in on the day of the shoot.

   - Match Skin Tone & Style:

  • Fair skin → jewel tones (royal blue, emerald, ruby) bring warmth.
  • Medium/olive → earth tones (rust, olive, deep blues) enhance richness.
  • Darker skin → bold colors (white, cobalt, yellow, red) pop beautifully.

   - Layers Add Dimension:

  • A blazer, cardigan, or jacket can elevate your look.

   - Bring Options:

  • Pack 2–3 tops so we can find the best look together. This won't apply to large corporate session as there won't be time to change into different looks.

2. Grooming & Appearance

   - Hair:

  • Style as you normally would for a professional setting. If you need a haircut or color touch-up, schedule it about a week in advance so it looks natural.

   - Skin:

  • Moisturize, but avoid heavy or shiny products. For men, shave right before the session if you want a clean-shaven look; if keeping facial hair, trim neatly.

   - Makeup:

  • Keep it natural and polished. Concealer/powder to reduce shine, light mascara, and neutral lipstick work best.

   - Glasses:

  • Clean them well before the session. If you have transition lenses, consider bringing a backup pair without them.

3. What to Bring

Pack a small bag with these essentials to ensure you're ready for anything.

   - Your Clothing Options:

  • Bring the 2-3 tops or blazers you've chosen, neatly packed to avoid wrinkles.

   - Accessories:

  • Small, simple accessories like stud earrings or a classic watch are great, but avoid anything too large or flashy.

   - Hair and Makeup Essentials:

  • A brush or comb, a small mirror, face powder to reduce shine, and your lipstick or lip balm are great to have on hand for quick touch-ups.

   - Water:

  • Staying hydrated is always a good idea.

4. Mental Prep — Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera

   - Practice Expressions:

  • Look in the mirror and practice subtle smiles, confident serious looks, and soft approachable expressions.

   - Think Professional, but Personable:

  • LinkedIn and resumes call for a mix of confidence and warmth.

   - Trust the Process:

  • I’ll guide you through posing, angles, and expressions. You don’t need to “know how”, I’ll help you feel comfortable and look your best.

   - Breathe & Relax:

  • During the shoot, take a deep breath. A relaxed expression is the most photogenic one. Think about what you're passionate about in your career, and let that confidence shine through.

5. Day of Your Session

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you’re not rushed.
  • Wear your first outfit to save time.
  • Stay hydrated and eat something light beforehand.
  • Come ready to have fun! This is about capturing your best professional self.
